VTT Invests To Develop District Heating Reactor In Finland
The Finnish VTT Technical Research Centre announced a 5 million euros investment in the next stage of the development work of its nuclear energy concept (LDR-50) and multiplies the size of the research team in the next 2 years.
The Centre declared to aim at building the first district heat reactor with Finnish actors by the end of 2030.
The LDR (low-temperature district heating and desalination reactor) technology is designed to operate at around 150°C and to produce 50 MW of heat.
VTT launched its project in February 2020. The aim is to design a nuclear district heating plant to serve small, medium-size and large district heating networks.
District heating is already the most common form of heating in Finland, covering 50% of Finnish houses and residential and commercial buildings.
