Slovak Nuclear Regulator Approved Commissioning Of Mochovce-3
The Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJD) has recently issued the final authorisation for the commissioning of Unit 3 at the Mochovce nuclear power plant.
The operator Slovenské elektrárne expects soon to start loading fuel into the reactor’s core ahead of its commissioning. The ÚJD decision will enter into force after 15 days, following which the loading of fuel can begin.
The launch of the nuclear block is an important milestone, it is great news for our company and for Slovakia. Especially now, at the time of the energy crisis. The third block of Mochovce and our people are ready for launch. We will start loading the fuel into the reactor immediately after this permit becomes valid.
said Slovenské elektráne CEO Branislav Strýček.
According to the company, Mochovce-3 should finally enter full commercial operation at the beginning of 2023.
Slovenské elektráne says also that the generation from Mochovce-3 will cover about 13% of Slovakia’s total electricity consumption, increasing the share of nuclear energy in the total electricity mix from 52% to 65%, putting the country second behind only France.
Moreover, the annual production of the reactor will save 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, and Slovakia will become self-sufficient in supplying the country with electricity.
