Serbian Nuclear Society In The National Debate On Atomic Energy

The Serbian Nuclear Society (SND – ENS Member Society) is among the signatories of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the development of nuclear energy in Serbia.

The SND joined 5 Ministries – Mining and Energy, Science, Technological Development and Innovation, Education, Environmental Protection, and Health – and representatives from 20 national academic faculties, scientific institutes and energy companies.

Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said that the goal is to gather experts from the country and abroad to examine the possibility of establishing a programme for nuclear energy in Serbia.

The same ministry added that “the use of nuclear energy is foreseen in one of the scenarios of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan” and that the 1989 moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power plants in the country “does not refer to scientific research and research-development works, mining-geological research works and staff training“.

Indeed, the construction of nuclear facilities like power plants, fuel production or processing plants, has been forbidden since 1989 – in the wake of the Chernobyl accident – and following the break-up of Yugoslavia Serbia continued this policy.

The Serbian Nuclear Society was established in 2023 by the initiative and enthusiasm of young nuclear experts aiming to introduce the public to the advantages for society and the environment of various peaceful applications of nuclear energy in industry, medicine, ecology, agriculture and all other segments of everyday life.

Following the approval of the General Assembly, ENS welcomed the Serbian Nuclear Society, as a new Member Society starting from 1st January 2024.

The Serbian Nuclear Society also has a very active Young Generation Network, which organises webinars and lectures, especially for young people, and is more and more present at several international conferences and events.
