New IAEA Publications On Research Reactors Available

The International Atomic Energy Agency published online two new publications on research reactors, namely “Digital Instrumentation and Control Systems for New and Existing Research Reactors” and “Impact of Fuel Density on Performance and Economy of Research Reactors“.

“Digital Instrumentation and Control Systems for New and Existing Research Reactors”

The purpose of this publication is to provide engineering guidance on the design, and operational aspects of digital I&C systems for the refurbishment of existing facilities and for new research reactors. Key areas addressed include codes and standards applicability, licensing issues, dealing with the change in human-system interface from analogue to digital technology, software verification and validation activities, periodic testing and inspection, and configuration management.

“Impact of Fuel Density on Performance and Economy of Research Reactors”

Research reactor fuel technology continues to evolve, driven in part by international efforts to develop high-density fuels to enable the conversion of more reactors from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to low enriched uranium (LEU) fuels. This publication provides a preliminary evaluation of the impacts on research reactor performance and fuel costs from using high density fuel. Several case studies are presented and compared to illustrate these impacts.
