Framatome To Support Sizewell C Project In The UK
Framatome (ENS Corporate Member) has signed several contracts with Sizewell C Ltd. to support the new nuclear build project in the UK.
This signing follows the British Government Investment Decision in November 2022 to approve the construction of two EPR reactors at Sizewell on the Suffolk Coast.
Within the scope of the Sizewell C project, Framatome will be responsible for the delivery of the two nuclear heat production systems, from design phase (replicated from Hinkley Point C) and their supply, up to their commissioning.
The company will also provide the plant’s safety instrumentation and control systems.
The agreement is completed by a long-term fuel supply agreement, under which Framatome will fabricate the fuel needed to power the two reactors, as well as a contract for long-term services and maintenance to support the operation of the plant.
From Framatome Press Release.
The two EPRs at Sizewell will generate 3.2 GW of low-carbon electricity and power the equivalent of around six million homes for sixty years.
Last year, the UK Government officially launched its flagship body Great British Nuclear (GBN), to support its ambition to provide up to a quarter of the UK’s electricity from homegrown nuclear energy by 2050 and achieve among the cheapest wholesale electricity prices in Europe, whilst supporting jobs across the country.
Following the launch of Great British Nuclear, the UK Government also announced the creation of a New Nuclear Skills Taskforce to support skills activity in the nuclear sector and to meet nuclear skills growth opportunities by bringing together government, employers and academia.
In order to pursue the ambitious plans announced with GBN, namely to deliver up to 24GW of nuclear power in the UK by 2050, a recent report by MPs said there will need to be a more than doubling of the current nuclear workforce from 65,000 to as many as 215,000 people.
