Krško NPP Gets Environmental Permit For Lifespan Extension To 2043

Krško nuclear power plant has obtained an environmental permit for its lifetime extension from 40 to 60 years. The only NPP in Slovenia will be so able to operate until 2043.

The Slovenian Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, which conducted the procedure in compliance with Slovenian environmental legislation and the provisions of the Espoo and Aarhus Conventions, issued an environmental approval last 13 January 2023.

The complex and extensive administrative procedure of obtaining the environmental approval for extending the operating life of the plant has been completed after more than two years of work, which involved more than 50 experts from the Krško NPP (NEK), and institutions from Slovenia and Croatia.

Furthermore, international observers from Croatia, Austria, Italy, Hungary and Germany joined the cross-border assessment process.

Krško is the only nuclear power plant in Slovenia.

It has a single 696-MW PWR unit, which produces about 5.4 TWh of electricity a year and provided 36.9% of Slovenia’s electricity production share in 2021. The lifetime extension of the facility means 20 years more of safe, reliable, low-carbon electricity for the country.
