GEH And TVA To Cooperate On BWRX-300 SMR Deployment In The US

GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH, ENS Corporate Member) and Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) signed an agreement to support the planning and the preliminary licensing for the potential deployment of a BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) at the Clinch River site, near Oak Ridge in Tennessee.

TVA said the agreement with GEH follows a collaboration agreement with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in April this year to develop advanced nuclear technology, including SMRs, in both Canada and the USA.

OPG last year also selected GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX-300 SMR for deployment at Darlington, where it says Canada’s first commercial, grid-scale, SMR could be completed as soon as 2028.

Advanced nuclear technologies like the BWRX-300 are a key pillar of GE’s energy transition leadership.

The BWRX-300 is a 300 MW water-cooled, natural circulation SMR with passive safety systems. It produces no carbon during operation and has been designed to achieve construction and operating costs that are substantially lower than traditional nuclear power generation technologies.
