Ukraine, Arising Interest In A Future Based On Nuclear Energy
Last week, two great news highlighted the commitment and the interest of Ukraine in the deployment of new nuclear reactors in the country, to boost the decarbonisation of the Ukrainian energy mix and to support an effective energy transition.
Westinghouse Signs Agreement To Deploy AP1000 Reactor Technology At ‘Multiple Sites’ – NucNet
Westinghouse Electric Company (ENS Corporate Member) and Energoatom have signed an exclusive agreement to bring Westinghouse AP1000 reactors to multiple sites in the eastern European country.
Energoatom, the state-owned nuclear utility of Ukraine, operates the country’s fleet of 15 commercial nuclear power plants, which in 2020 provided about 51% of the country’s electricity production share.
Westinghouse AP1000 technology is the only Generation III+ reactor technology licensed by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and in several countries in Europe and Asia. Four AP1000 units are in commercial operation in China and two more are nearing completion at the Vogtle site in the US. Moreover, this technology has been selected for a six-unit project in India and is under consideration by several countries all around the world.
Energoatom And NuScale Sign Agreement To Explore Deployment Of SMRs – NucNet
US-based small modular reactor developer NuScale Power and Energoatom have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the deployment of NuScale plants in Ukraine.
NuScale said the agreement is further evidence of growing international interest in its SMRs and indicative of Ukraine’s desire to find new, innovative sources of clean, reliable, and affordable energy.
Under the MoU, NuScale will support Energoatom’s examination of NuScale’s SMR technology, including a feasibility study for proposed sites, the development of a schedule, cost studies, technical reviews, licensing and permitting activities, and project specific engineering studies and design work.
