A nuclear reactor suitable for use in a nuclear power plant, in contrast to reactors which are mainly used for research purposes or to generate fissile material. Power reactors have a thermal output of up to 5,000 MW corresponding an electric output of 1,500 MW. See ' boiling water reactor', 'pressurized water reactor'.
