Marcel Maris (°1946) is Head of the Department Projects & Quality Management in Bel V (a subsidiary of the FANC), the Beligan Technical Safety Organisation. He graduated in 1969 at the KULeuven as electro-mechanical engineer, in 1971 at the Univ. of California at Berkeley as M.Sc. of Applied Mechanics and in 1978 at the KULeuven as doctor in applied sciences. He holds since 1984 a license issued by the Belgian nuclear authorities as expert for the nuclear installations inspected by Bel V and for transport of fissile materials. His professional career started at the Vinçotte group in the area of inspection of pressure retaining components and later on in the inspection of construction and installation of nuclear components. Since 1981 he has worked in the nuclear safety department of Vinçotte, first AVN and now Bel V, starting with the supervision of the commissioning of the Doel 4 NPP. |
After 10 years as leading inspector for the Doel site, he has been project manager for all the international projects, which aimed at supporting the nuclear regulatory authorities in eastern countries (Armenia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine). This work started in 1991 and included amongst other the participation at various audits, fora and working groups, especially those organised by the European Commission and the IAEA, in view of establishing the nuclear safety status in these countries and making proposals for assistance programmes. Since 2000 he has been appointed as division head and is responsible for the projects related to the Belgian NPPs (replacement of steam generators, periodic safety reviews) as well as for the projects related to eastern countries.
At present he is also leading an intensive recruitment process for Bel V. In order to assure the transfer of knowledge of nuclear safety and radiation protection principles he has supported the now improved training programme and teaches part of the courses.
Marcel has intensively supported the Belgian young generation in nuclear. Being chairman of the Belgian Nuclear Society in 2006-2007, he used this opportunity to increase the (financial) support for the Young Generation Network (YGN), and to convince directors of other nuclear companies and institutions of the benefit of their support to the YGN. Moreover he still is very active and personally involved in the activities of the Young Generation Network, e.g. as a jury member of the annual BNS Master Thesis Contest. Marcel Maris is a warm, dynamic and open person, young at heart, ready to drive the enthusiasm of young nuclear |

professionals to stimulate the transfer of knowledge and communicate about the peaceful applications of the fascinating nuclear science and technology.
Therefore the Belgian Nuclear Society Young Generation Network wants to thank Marcel Maris for his continuous support and is very delighted that he has been chosen to receive the Jan Runemark award 2009.
